The Jian Zhou Memorial Oration, delivered annually by a guest from the medical research sector, honours the memory of Dr Jian Zhou, who co-discovered the life-saving Gardasil vaccine for cervical cancer with Emeritus Professor Ian Frazer AC.
The vaccine was an international breakthrough and has significantly lowered the risk of HPV-related cancers for thousands of women globally since its commercial release. Proudly developed in Queensland, the vaccine put the state on the map for ground-breaking research success.
Dr Zhou was a founding member of the centre that became the UQ Diamantina Institute, and we seek to honour the memory of his warm personality and genuine interest in the welfare of others through the Oration.

Delivered annually, the Jian Zhou Memorial Oration honours the memory of Dr Jian Zhou, who, alongside Emeritus Professor Ian Frazer AC, co-discovered the world’s first cervical cancer vaccine, Gardasil.
This year, the event will also serve as a special celebration of Emeritus Professor Frazer’s achievements and contributions to the field of medical research as he retires from his UQ appointment.
Following a performance by Opera Queensland, Emeritus Professor Frazer will present the oration, and also reflect on his career and the future of his research.
