Overview

Professor Hamilton-Wiliams will share her insights into the latest research on understanding the causes and new interventions to prevent autoimmune disease type 1 diabetes.

The disease affects over 130,000 Australians, with 8 people diagnosed every day, mainly children. Despite insulin therapy, people with type 1 diabetes face a lifetime burdened with this disease losing on average 19 years of healthy life.

About Jian Zhou Memorial Oration

Delivered annually by a distinguished speaker from the medical research sector, the Oration honours the memory of Dr Jian Zhou, who co-discovered the life-saving Gardasil vaccine for cervical cancer, alongside Emeritus Professor Ian Frazer AC.

About Dr Jian Zhou

Dr Jian Zhou was a founding member of the Centre which became the Frazer Institute (formerly UQ Diamantina Institute) and we seek to honour the memory of his warm personality and genuine interest in the welfare of others through the Oration.
