On Friday the 29th of July, nine researchers from The Unversity of Queensland Diamantina Institute theorised it out at the annual 3 Minute Thesis competition.
As part of their candidature, the nine competitors had to present their research projects in less than three minutes to a panel of five judges from UQDI and IMB.
The two winners were Rumal Jayalath and Felicity Rose, for their insightful and engaging, albeit brief presentations. Rumal presented "Taming the beast", about her research project on improving current therapies for adult brain cancer.
Felicity presented "Can an orange a day keep the dietician away", a research project about the effect of vitamin C in targeting obesity-related diseases.
The People's Choice award went to Ritchie Hughes, for his presentation on "T-cells which are tolerogenic towards cancer cell neo-antigens", about his research investigation on lymphoma induced immune tolerance.
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland.
The exercise develops academic, presentation, and research communication skills and supports the development of research students' capacity to effectively explain their research in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience.
Research higher degree (PhD and MPhil) students have three minutes to present a compelling oration on their thesis topic and its significance. 3MT is not an exercise in trivialising or ‘dumbing-down’ research but forces students to consolidate their ideas and crystalise their research discoveries.
Both Rumal and Felicity will now go on to compete at the inter Institute's final in late August.
